The Vienna Museum of Applied Arts MAK is addressing contemporary artistic photography and its impact on the understanding of architecture until April. The exhibition "ENVISIONING BUILDINGS - Reflecting Architecture in Contemporary Art Photography" showcases the mutual influence of both artistic fields. The exhibit primarily focuses on the works of significant contemporary artists who have, through their photography, managed to change the perspective and values of photography in recent years.
Attention is directed towards iconic buildings of the 20th and 21st centuries. This includes Frank Lloyd Wright, Erich Mendelsohn, Berthold Lubetkin, the Tecton Group, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier, Philip Johnson, and Ernst Plischke, as well as contemporary architects Frank O. Gehry, Herzog & de Meuron, Kenzo Tange, and Peter Zumthor. In addition to the aforementioned architects, this exhibition assigns great importance to Rudolph M. Schindler, who shares a long special bond with MAK. This has led to the establishment of the "MAK Center for Art and Architecture" in Los Angeles as well as the "MAK-Schindler-Stipendiatenprogramms" programs and scholarships at Mackey Apartments, where Candida Höfer and Hiroshi Sugimoto found inspiration, for example. The exhibition has eight thematic areas - restoration, reanimation, housing, utopian visions, deconstruction, fragmentation, critical and systemic analysis. It touches on discourses relevant to both artistic photography and architecture. The exhibition thus offers a wide range of stimuli and questions for those interested in architecture and design and confirms the interdisciplinary direction of the Vienna MAK.
The exhibition brought together artists from around the world. They are: Sabine Bitter & Helmut Weber (AT), Mladen Bizumić (NZ/AT), José Davila (MX), Werner Feiersinger (AT), Andreas Fogarasi (AT/HU), Cyprien Gaillard (FR), Andreas Gursky (DE), Gavin Hipkins (NZ), Candida Höfer (DE), Geoff Kleem (AU), Joachim Koester (DK), Luisa Lambri (IT/US), Thomas Locher (DE), Marko Lulić (AT), Dorit Margreiter (AT), John Massey (CA), Maix Mayer (DE), Sarah Morris (UK/US), Warren Neidich (US/DE), Sandra Peters (DE), Pia Rönicke (DK), Thomas Ruff (DE), Allan Sekula (US), Thomas Struth (DE), Hiroshi Sugimoto (JP/US), James Welling (US), Jane & Louise Wilson (UK), and Tobias Zielony (DE).
