The city of Kolín and Mr. Tomáš Benák cordially invite you to the ceremonial unveiling of the vision by the artist Jan Kubíček realized by architect Zdeněk Fránek.
The initiative to implement Jan Kubíček's design in Kolín was taken by Mr. Tomáš Benák, a Prague collector of his work. He first approached architect Fránek and then also Kubíček's hometown with an offer to finance the realization of one of the artist's designs. The specific selection was made by the author of the realization, architect Fránek, after obtaining consent from the heirs. He also determined the suitable location - the upper end of Husova náměstí. Thus, the modernist object will conclude the longitudinal axis formed by the functionalist church at the lower end of the square and the Bílka statue of Jan Hus in its center. The creation of the sculpture was financed by Mr. Tomáš Benák, while the landscaping and laying of the foundations were funded by the city of Kolín, which thus acknowledges the legacy of another of its famous natives. The production of the object was ensured in his workshop in Ždírec near Havlíčkův Brod by Mr. Václav Svoboda and his son.
The object will be unveiled on July 25 at 17:00 on Husova náměstí in Kolín.
The introductory speech will be given by the mayor of Kolín, Mgr. Vít Rakušan. Following him, prof. Ing. arch. Zdeněk Fránek and the daughter of the late artist, PhDr. Kateřina Kubíčková-Zvelebilová, will speak.
JAN KUBÍČEK was born in Kolín in 1927 and died there in 2013. He spent most of his time living and creating in Prague. His name is now particularly associated with internationally recognized artistic work. In the 1960s, he was a member of the group Křižovatka (together with Jiří Kolář, Zdeněk Sýkora, Karel Malich, and others).
In the last three years, Jan Kubíček's extensive work has been primarily presented by the Gallery of the Capital City of Prague, the Angermuseum in Erfurt, and the Leopold Hoesch Museum in Düren. This year, a larger showcase of Jan Kubíček's drawings and paintings can be seen at the Jan Kubík Gallery in Litomyšl. The exhibition JAN KUBÍČEK: A JOURNEY INTO THE FUTURE, which began on June 11, will last until September 3. It will also include the premiere of a documentary about this artist produced by Czech Television.
In addition to painting, graphic, and sculpture compositions, Jan Kubíček also dedicated himself to photography. The public can currently become acquainted with a selection of his photographic works at the exhibition, JAN KUBÍČEK/PHOTOGRAPHY, which has been prepared from private collections by the Museum of Applied Arts in Prague (Josef Sudek Gallery, Úvoz 24, Prague 1).
The paintings of Jan Kubíček are in several galleries in the Czech Republic and abroad. Some also have his three-dimensional works intended for interiors, and in Switzerland, a pool has been constructed according to his design in a private building. However, Kolín is becoming the very first city where a three-dimensional realization of the artist's vision will be part of the public space. This will fulfill the idea that the artist himself wrote in one of his diaries. "The things I have been developing in recent years have been heading in their form and essence much more towards an architectural-sculptural form than to a wall-hanging type of painting. Their own meaning and function should therefore be integration and merging into other larger architectural forms or contexts."
Prof. Ing. arch. ZDENĚK FRÁNEK (born August 26, 1961, in Boskovice) is the dean of the Faculty of Art and Architecture at the Technical University of Liberec. He lives in Blansko and works mainly in Brno, where he has a studio. His successful realizations include, for example, the prayer houses of the Brethren Church in Litomyšl and Černošice, the congress hall in Žďár nad Sázavou, the Cloud Path at the upper station of the cable car to Králický Sněžník, the multifunctional building Eucon in Prague, and the Czech China Contemporary Gallery in Beijing, as well as an apartment building there. Currently, the Jaroslav Fragner Gallery at Betlémské náměstí in Prague is presenting examples of some of his realizations (the lookout tower Cloud Path in Moravia, the residential building Face House in Prague, and the energy self-sufficient development center LIKO-Noe near Slavkov). The exhibition ZDENĚK FRÁNEK: MEASURE & SCALE will run until September 24. More of Fránek's works are also featured in three books by Zdeněk Fránek: Perspectives, Buildings, and Measure and Scale.
