Pardubice

We cordially invite you to visit and rest at the temporary architectural intervention by Austrian architect Gerhard Feldbacher as the summer holidays come to an end. Two stops of his mobile teahouse will temporarily inhabit two places with a specific genius loci: the former military swimming pool and the shooting range by the Chrudimka River and the area of the former Prokopka on Palackého Street.

Gerhard Feldbacher (AT): Flying Teahouse

August 27–28, 2019 | former military swimming pool and shooting range under Vinice || Stop by anytime during the day to rest, discuss, talk with the author, and meet your friends here in a calm spirit.

August 29, 2019 | 4:00 PM–8:00 PM | Prokopka (entrance from the eastern side, from K Polabinám Street) || The second stop of the teahouse behind the wall of the former Prokopka. A reminder of the site's history and drinking tea made from local herbs, which were collected here in spring by visual artist Marta Fisherová Cwiklinski, whose installation (Garden of Walls) is part of the exhibition emptiness at the GAMPA city gallery (until September 29, 2019). We thank ČSOB Bank and Insurance for enabling the short-term opening of the site and the realization of this happening.

Gerhard Feldbacher (AT) is a young Austrian architect who focuses theoretically and practically on themes of mobile structures and architecture. His teahouse (Flying Teahouse) is built in a traditional Japanese way: it has sliding paper walls (shoji), is furnished with tatami mattresses, and features a sunken hearth (irori) with a special hanger (jizai-kagi) for a teapot (tetsubin) for preparing tea.

Although it is a traditional teahouse, it is not intended solely as a place for tea rituals but primarily as a social space – a place for gatherings, open discussions, reading, a space for intimate concerts, and meditation.

"People often ask me what led me to build a Japanese house on wheels. Honestly: I don't know anyone who has done this before. When I started working on the project five years ago, I was fascinated by the archaic character of the architecture: having an open fire in the middle of a room with paper walls and straw mattresses is a concept worlds away from modern ways of living. When I finished the house, it turned out that its aura is even further: it has an attractive power and helps to transfer my personal fascination to others." GF

Organized by Offcity z.s. in collaboration with the GAMPA gallery as part of the OFFCITY 2019 project and the emptiness x fulfillment festival with financial support from the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the statutory city of Pardubice, and the Czech Architecture Foundation.
