The opening will take place on June 2nd in all areas of VŠUP starting at 6:00 PM. The exhibition will run in all school spaces from June 3rd to June 12th. Daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
What did the students of the Academy of Art, Architecture and Design in Prague focus on in the summer semester? A glimpse into the studios where new prototypes of utility items, futuristic clothing, or multimedia images are created will be possible at the traditional exhibition of VŠUP students' final works Artsemestr 2011. The exhibition will last from June 3rd to June 12th. This year's summer final works are exceptional in two respects. The first is the fact that it is the first time under the leadership of the new rector of the Academy of Art, Architecture and Design in Prague, Prof. Jindřich Smetana. The new rector replaced Dr. Pavel Liška in the school's leadership in February of this year, who had been at the school for the last four years. Other news is related to the relocation of the Zlin studios back to Prague. A number of accompanying activities will take place in Zlin this year, through which students and faculty of the Product Design I and II studios will say goodbye to the place where the School of Art, focused on design, operated since 1945.
What will the individual studios offer? Students of the K.O.V Studio, led by Eva Eisler, focused on an assignment with spatial and conceptual extension from object to installation. Liběna Rochová, head of the Fashion and Footwear Design Studio, assigned her students the theme FANTASY - MYSTERY - SCI-FI. After several recent final works, where students focused more on wearable clothing (collaborations with the Pietro Filipi company or the final "My Brand"), this final work is more open to artistic form. “I don’t want us to design “just dresses,” it’s about conceptual thinking in clothing with extensions into fine arts,” says the head of the studio, Liběna Rochová. The assignment for the finals is based on the title of a festival of music and film focused on fantasy, mystery, and sci-fi genres. Students processed the topic with emphasis on the artistic interpretation of clothing form, placing greater emphasis on clothing objects. The Graphic Design and Visual Communication Studio, led by Prof. Vaněk, will present four projects at Artsemestr: - Graphic sheets - serigraphy in size 70x70 cm as an original interpretation of an artistic work. This task is part of the visual style of the National Gallery. - Map as a basic element of visual communication. From public transportation plans to purely personal messages and records of selected spaces. - Banknotes with added value as a memento of a study stay in N.Y. - Visual style of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic.
In the Graphic Design and New Media Studio, under the guidance of Petr Babák, a fresh influx of young graphic design emerged. Students worked on, for example, a new visual style for the Fresh Film Fest, the exhibition Like Home at GASK, mobile banking, and many other unusual topics. The studio's leadership says of the finals: “Come, the golden doors are open for you! PS: This time, not every shot hit the mark!”
Students of the Painting Studio primarily focused on finding their own themes and forms. Painter Jiří Černický, who leads the studio, says: “Our priority is to inspire them in their efforts and encourage them to push their boundaries in as unorthodox a manner as possible. Their only task, or our recommendation, was to do so with a full understanding and knowledge of the frameworks of contemporary art, or of the contemporary world, and to also try to find within themselves a desire to transcend the boundaries of contemporary art somewhere beyond.”
In the Architecture I Studio, future architects dealt with the topic of the Czech small town with significant historical context during the past semester. The choice fell on the town of Sázava, where students addressed problems at scales ranging from comprehensive urban strategies to solutions for specific sites and buildings.
Jan Němeček and Michal Froňek, known to the public as Olgoj Chorchoj, assigned their students in the Product Design III Studio several smaller tasks: an object of desire for the Milan exhibition of VŠUP, a personal lighter, décor for robotically ground glass, wall and wristwatches. The finals assignment also includes an unconventional presentation of a sports brand within a design exhibition, which will certainly be a big surprise!
In the Ceramics and Porcelain Studio, the final works will connect with the semester works and will be based on the assignments of individual years. The head of the studio, Pavel Knapek, assigned first-year students and interns the task of complementing their winter semester vases with small flower vases. For the 2nd and 4th years, the assignment is to expand the semester task - a kettle - into a beverage set. In the third year, the beverage set will be enriched with serving accessories. Finally, students in the fifth year have free topics.
The Illustration and Graphic Studio worked on original books across a wide range from large underground comics, through works using diary forms, to adventure or almost abstract books. The books are drawn, sprayed through stencils, engraved into linoleum, or printed from stone. There will also be a unique database of drawn motifs Vabank for sale! And also a completely fresh novelty: a series of screen-printed puzzles LOOP!
The main semester task for the Fashion Creation Studio, led by Josef Ťapťuch, was the theme “Tailoring Laboratory”. Students studied the iconography and technical aspects of some basic structures of modern clothing culture and then developed them into their own original collections. Four students produced their collections in real conditions of Pret-a-Porter industrial production.
And what interests the students in the Film and Television Graphics Studio? Discussions with cabbages. What’s happening in Chinese soup. But also more serious dives into inner worlds. Last semester, students had the opportunity to work on more personal projects. This resulted in a whole variety of opinions, styles, and techniques. Comics, graphic design, music videos, but also author films and animations. A visit to the Film and Television Graphics Studio will definitely not be boring. In Zlin, Artsemestr will be held in the spirit of farewell. During Artsemestr, the final works of all students created in the spring semester under the guidance of Ivan Dlabač (Product Design I Studio), František Burian (Product Design II Studio), as well as Michal Froňek and Jan Němeček from Product Design III Studio, will be presented. A bonus is another exhibition that Radim Babák and Ondřej Tobola presented at the Milan Salone del Mobile in April. The main theme for thirty student works was desire and its thematic processing. Among other things, it will also be possible to view exhibitions that will remind us of the history of the school, its functioning, and its famous teachers and graduates. The farewell will culminate on Friday, June 24th, at 5 PM with a gathering of graduates.
