The winners of the Central Group student architectural competition are already known. The top three student designs on the theme “Unique Building in a Complicated Location” shared a financial prize of 175,000 CZK. The winner, who received a check for 100,000 CZK, will also look forward to an internship in the studio of prominent Czech architect Josef Pleskot. The announcement took place at yesterday's social evening held on the occasion of the Architecture and Development Summit, organized by the Association for Architecture and Development. The judges, which included architectural historian Zdeněk Lukeš and architects David Vávra, Adam Gebrian, and Ondřej Chybík, selected from nearly 40 proposals. Central Group has been supporting students from Czech universities in this way for many years. By organizing student architectural competitions, it contributes long-term to the education of the upcoming generation of architects. “As the largest residential developer in the country, it is very important for us to support the development of education in this prestigious field. From the responses of leading architects and the students themselves, we know that the experience gained from preparing a project for the architectural competition is very important for their future thinking and direction,” said Central Group CEO and competition initiator Dušan Kunovský. A total of 36 proposals were submitted for the 11th edition. The only, but all the more attractive topic was “Unique Building in a Complicated Location”. Architectural historian Zdeněk Lukeš chaired the jury, who found the competition’s theme very appealing. “This year’s edition was successful, mainly thanks to the very well-chosen theme. Although we saw quite a few conventional proposals, there were also several buildings that were definitely not conventional. Those were the ones we tried to highlight,” evaluated this year’s edition Lukeš. The judges unanimously agreed that organizing architectural competitions is very important not only for students. “It’s great that such opportunities exist for students here, that students and later architects participate in competitions, because it is absolutely crucial for them moving forward,” praised the organization of the competition architect and actor David Vávra. Adam Gebrian, a well-known promoter of architecture, positively assessed the opportunity for an internship in Josef Pleskot’s studio. “During my studies, I had the opportunity to get to know two foreign offices from the inside, and I can confirm that this experience was crucial for me. I would advise the winner to keep an open eye and observe what is happening around them, and not to focus solely on their own work, but to concentrate on the space and what is happening in it,” Gebrian recommends. The internship in Josef Pleskot's studio was also a significant benefit for last year’s winner Václav Ulč. Last year, he succeeded in the category Practical and Effective Housing with his design for an apartment building in Prague's Břevnov. “I had the chance to literally peek under the lid of the place where such remarkable projects are born. Right from the beginning, Josef Pleskot warned us that this is not a place of miracles. Still, everyone sees that truly exceptional buildings are being created there, and in my opinion, it is the personality of architect Pleskot that can deliver such performances even in an ordinary environment,” praised the impact of the internship Ulč.
