![]() Creating space. With a higher degree of green utilization. Where does the landscape end and the garden begin? It varies each time, often they overlap. If we want to find a clear boundary, it might be a fence. What are the current trends in garden architecture, is there a contemporary "style"? Naturalness, inconspicuous organization, low maintenance requirements on one side. On the other side, various "exhibitions" such as green facades, modeling of terrain and plants into strictly regular to unnatural shapes, etc., enabled by new technologies and at a high purchase price and also high subsequent maintenance costs. Both are necessary; there needs to be a comparison. For me, it is important that the space is pleasant to stay in. Which three realizations do you consider the most characteristic of your work? We deal with various types of projects, but there are not yet enough of them for me to consider some as characteristic of my work. However, a family garden will certainly be a common project; I tend to repeat similar themes and favorite plant combinations - a friend who is a gardener and often realizes my projects says he can recognize from the planting plan that I drew the greenery, regardless of whether it is a family garden or greenery for a residential complex. Recently, we have been very much involved in street tree rows in Prague, both in the conceptual phase – designs of tree row systems for several Prague cadastres, and in execution projects for specific streets. We are also currently solving the grounds of residential complexes, where experiences from creating family gardens overlap. The goal is always for the user (resident) to feel at home in the given space and want to use it, even though the grounds of the residential complex are accessible to a larger number of people. What experience do you have with lay clients and architect clients? Lay clients tend to have greater trust - they say they lack imagination, so they trust. Architect clients, on the other hand, have quite clear ideas and want to oversee everything down to the smallest detail, as they are used to, but sometimes they struggle to absorb the reality that greenery evolves, and the work is never completely finished and identical. It is sometimes good to plant different plants and in different quantities at the beginning than what will be in the "final desired composition," and that although the garden architect knows the requirements of the plants well, they can never guarantee one hundred percent that the given plant will thrive in that specific location, and it is necessary to return to the realizations. Gardening is working with living material that cannot be compared by rulers. What are the pitfalls during the realization of your designs and conversely? When the investor saves at the end of construction, while during the design process they wanted a "dream garden." Unfortunately, landscaping always comes at the end of the entire construction process, and the investor is usually exhausted (often not only financially) and sometimes compromises or changes are made, sometimes even offered by the contracting company itself without consulting with the architect. The original idea may then be lost from the work, which may not be apparent at first glance. A similar problem is the absence of the garden architect at inspection days, especially for larger constructions, when if the preparation of the site for landscaping is neglected and the required quality of substrates including their permeability is not met, it is difficult to achieve a good outcome. When the garden architect is invited for inspection only at the end of construction, they can only assess the number and condition of the plants, but what is important is hidden below the surface.
The Uptown München ground (Ingenhoven Architects). The ground is solved very simply - at planting already quite mature pines were planted into large gravel areas, modeled into gentle hills and sometimes interwoven with concrete water strips. I was mainly impressed by the planting of these areas with extensive vegetation - communities of grasses and perennials with natural self-regulation and thus with an expected low maintenance requirement. Externally simple, yet well thought out. Which of your projects are currently being realized? Restoration of tree rows in Vinohradská street, Prague (a05, investor MHMP, DPS 2005-2006). Revitalization of Friendship Park Prague 9 (a05 in collaboration with Dr. Ing. arch. Otakar Kuča, investor MČ Praha 9, DPS 2007). Residence Riegrovy sady, landscaping (developer RS residence s.r.o., DPS 2005). Forestry park near the residential complex Na Krutci Prague 6 (investor Metrostav Krutec, s.r.o. DPS 2006).
