Biography
Michael Szyszkowitz was an Austrian architect and a representative of the deconstructivist movement 'Grazer Schule' based in Graz. He studied architecture at the Technical University of Graz. From 1970-71, he worked in the studio of Domenig & Huth on the Olympic buildings in Munich. There, he met his future wife Karla Szyszkowitz-Kowalski, with whom he founded the joint office Szyszkowitz + Kowalski in Graz in 1978. He was a co-founder and later president of the House of Architecture (HDA Graz). From 1998 to 2012, he was a professor at the Technical University of Braunschweig, where he served as dean of the Faculty of Architecture from 2003 to 2005. Since 1999, he was a member of the Expert Commission for the historic part of Graz. Since 2005, the office has partnered with Michael Lyssy and Ignacio Chavero García. In 2009, they donated the majority of their work to the Berlin Academy of Arts. Michael Szyszkowitz passed away in February 2016 at the age of 71 during a vacation in the Maldives.
