Biography
Sir Leslie Martin was an English modernist architect whose work was significantly influenced by Alvar Aalto. He studied architecture at the University of Manchester and subsequently taught at the universities of Hull, Oxford, and Cambridge. After World War II, he held the position of director of the architectural department of the London County Council at the Center for Land Use and Building Studies, which later bore his name. He also chaired the journal Circle, which he co-edited with painter Ben Nicholson and sculptor Naum Gabo, and which became the primary medium for disseminating modernist ideas in post-war Britain. In 1957, he was knighted. For his contributions, he was awarded the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) gold medal in 1973.
