Biography
In 1957, he graduated from the Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering at the Brno University of Technology. Since 1957, he worked as an architect at the Ostrava Stavoprojekt, and from 1991 he was self-employed, specializing mainly in theatrical buildings.
Ivo Klimeš focused primarily on the architecture of theatrical buildings and their reconstructions (e.g., the new theater in Most, the Antonín Dvořák Theater in Ostrava, the Jiří Myron Theater, the Theater in Opava), as well as other significant designs, competition projects, and realizations.
In Klimeš's work, his generational affiliation with the wave of young progressive post-war architects played a significant role, among whom he distinguished himself as a distinctive creator focused on the issues of theatrical buildings. His professional career was characterized by successful participation in numerous architectural competitions. Klimeš's competition designs for theaters brought progressive proposals for variable theatrical spaces allowing for new staging methods. This experiment was realized in the case of the new theater in Most, which at the time had no equivalent in our country due to its architectural and technical solutions.
A remarkable part of architect Klimeš's work is also his artistic activity and extensive collaboration with leading artists. The artworks and their integration into architecture are a very prominent accent in the work of Ivo Klimeš.
Ivo Klimeš's architecture undoubtedly enriched especially the cultural life of Ostrava and created space for other artists and related professional fields (direction, acting, scenography, visual arts, theater criticism, history of architecture and theater).
