The development of the art of moving image has reached a diverse range of presentation modes, such as film or gallery space, television, or graphic design of mobile device players. For example, architect and designer Frederick Kiesler envisioned the technological future of moving images in projections onto clouds; in the 1950s, he spoke of a film space with the projection of infinite film.
The examples used for the exhibition are based on sketches and plans for building spaces and installations that were intended for the projection of moving images over more than a hundred years. A total of sixteen illustrated projects will be presented, alternating in pairs over the course of eight weeks.
The title of the exhibition Black Mary refers to the first film studio adapted for shooting films for the kinetoscope, which was built by American inventor Thomas Alva Edison in New Jersey between 1892 and 1893.
The accompanying program will take place in the form of lectures, discussions, artist presentations, or screenings.
