The Caballero Factory

The Caballero Factory
Architect: GROUP A
Address: Saturnusstraat, Den Haag, Netherlands
Project:2003
Completion:2004-06
Area:7900 m2

The Caballero Fabriek, housed in the building of a former tobacco company, contains offices and studios for small, starting companies in the field of ICT, media and culture. The city of Den Haag, owner of the building, wanted a social building where networking is easily possible.

GROUP A translated this wish into a spatial concept which stimulates creative and innovative activity and crosspollination between the different companies and fields. Therefore common spaces and meeting points take centre stage.

The original factory building from 1953 was left untouched, later additions were demolished. The industrial character remains intact while newfuncions got a different design. Backbone of the building is the newly created broad corridor which doubles as a meeting place. Canteen, lounge places and the central reception area are located here. The corridor links the 56 units. To save space and to leave the space open and light the conference rooms are hung from the ceiling as wooden boxes. The finish of these and other elements remains rawto preserve the factory athmosphere. Light is an important unifying factor: The reopened skylights and the vitreous sliding doors and walls from transparent Rodeca create an light, open and homogenous space. Printed screens in front of the main facade define the exterior view.

Phase one was opened in June 2006, phase 2 will be ready in September 2008.

The Caballero Fabriek in Den Haag is the big winner of the competition "Nieuwe Stad Prijs Den Haag 2006" (New City Award The Hague 2006). For the first time in the history of this prize two awards went to the same project. The jury voted unanimously for the project by GROUP A, and 40% of the public chose the Caballero Fabriek as their most favourite renovation project of the year.
