The highest lookout tower in the Krkonoš Mountains (the highest platform is 27 meters above the ground) is located just below the summit of Hnědý vrch near the upper station of the cable car. The slightly splayed structure consists of three pairs of columns made of natural wooden poles, which are connected by a steel structure at the level of the individual floors. The triangular shape of the base and main platforms is unique.
A basic criterion that we set for the design of the lookout tower was to create a proposal for a "transparent lookout tower" that would blend in with the surroundings as much as possible in distant views. For this reason, a classic timber construction was excluded, which would be disproportionately massive at the height necessary for a quality view. A design combining wood and steel was chosen. At the same time, it was necessary to find a shape for the lookout tower that would ensure sufficient spatial stability given the required height and the challenging weather conditions of the location.
The lookout tower is designed with a triangular base, with the posts at the corners of the triangular footprint being doubled. These posts are made of unplaned logs. The connecting elements and all horizontal elements are made of galvanized steel. These posts end at the penultimate observation platform at a height of 22.5 meters. The last platform and the roof of the lookout tower are supported by three steel beams. The steel staircase is supported by a central steel shaft anchored to the horizontal braces of the tower. The railings and steps of the staircase are also designed in steel and are made of grating panels.
