Family house with an atelier and a conservatory

Family house with an atelier and a conservatory
Project:2015
Completion:2025

Award: Finalist of the Rudolf Eitelberger Prize 2025

“An original family house of a creative investor couple literally sprawls on the slope of a narrow garden plot, on the edge of a village and on the edge of hills. The building program of the house – an open space for addition and subtraction – is translated into separate wooden blocks that inhabit the flower-filled garden. The architects composed both the structure of the blocks and the space between them, as well as the very structure of their wooden surfaces. The concept allows the house to constantly grow. The latest element of the insulated blocks became the greenhouse at the top of the plot. The jury was impressed by the interior spaces of the main living block with the precisely designed delicate stair construction, as well as the detail of the outdoor pool. They reflect the expertise and timeless echo of constructivism. The concept of blocks freely scattered in space and the financial possibilities of the builders take precedence over detail. The jury appreciated the simplicity of execution and at times the subtle imperfections, so characteristic of the intense feeling of a home.”

The design of the family house is a response to the small surrounding development, which primarily has a recreational character in this area. The house achieves a small scale by being divided into 8 objects – either interconnected or independent, defined by their functions. The entire set is covered by a pergola, which creates a living patio among the objects – a significant element of the house. The patio creates a connection between the house and nature, standing on the border between the interior and the exterior. The irregular positioning of the individual objects divides the courtyard into spaces – rooms, whose location and shape determine their function.
All objects have a square floor plan and a flat roof.
Only the living part of the house is two stories high and is directly connected to the other objects – the study, guest room, and technical facilities. Standalone are the workshop/storage, studio, sauna, and atrium.
The expression of the house is intended to be in harmony with nature. Its cubic shapes will be softened by a wooden façade adorned with larch cladding. This will differ in dimensions and orientation of placement for the individual forms.
