Apartment renovation in Ostrava

Apartment renovation in Ostrava

The apartment is located in a building dating from the late 1920s in the very heart of Ostrava. Its condition was so poor that nothing short of a radical renovation made sense. Everything except the load-bearing structures was removed. A new layout was created within the completely stripped-out, two-bay space, eliminating the corridors, walk-through rooms, maids’ rooms, and other features of the previous arrangement. The emphasis is on a generous communal space connecting all the rooms. This forms the heart of the apartment, where everything important takes place. The choice of materials reflects the character of the original urban apartment. The original double-frame windows were restored, while the beech parquet was replaced with oak flooring. The terrazzo in the former pantry served as the model for the new entrance hall floor, made of white-cement terrazzo. Four new doors, each 2.5 metres tall and echoing the four existing double-frame windows, are made of stained pine plywood, as are the kitchen cabinets. The bathroom furniture and the built-in bunk bed in the children’s rooms are made of birch plywood.
