The reconstruction of an apartment in Prague's Jinonice brings a fresh and playful interior designed to meet the needs of a young family of four. The task was to transform a 103 m² apartment with a terrace wrapping around almost its entire perimeter into a functional, airy, and aesthetically striking home that offers enough privacy and shared space.
The architects from the Důmysl studio decided on a fundamental step – reorienting the original layout of the apartment. This achieved a new orientation, where the main living spaces, namely the kitchen and living room, face south, thus benefiting from maximum natural light. Conversely, the quiet zone of the bedrooms was moved to the northern side, ensuring pleasant conditions for rest. This radical intervention defined the overall character of the reconstruction and became one of the key principles of the design, along with the extension of the entrance hallway.
The dominant spatial element of the new solution is a centrally located generous bathroom, which was created in the middle of the apartment. This space is equipped with a bathtub and a large shower cubicle and is notable for a thoughtful detail in the form of frosted, opaque glass above the bathtub. This allows natural light to penetrate from the hallway into the bathroom while maintaining the intimacy of the space. The room is surrounded on the outside by furniture with rich storage spaces made of bleached plywood, which becomes one of the main material motifs of the entire interior.
A specific feature of the apartment was from the beginning the perimeter walls without a single right angle. The architects embraced this challenge as an opportunity and worked with it as an expressive means. The interior thus gains dynamics and originality, which is highlighted by the combination of several characteristic colored materials and details – the aforementioned bleached plywood, rounded blue-striped dressers, generous upholstered seating designed to fit under the window, a bathroom in a completely brick tone, or concrete plaster in the main living areas.
The overall concept of the interior is playful, fully functional, and distinctive. Its atmosphere is enhanced by elements such as white-painted ladders, which expand the possibilities for using the space and support the family's active lifestyle, or, for example, the dining table, which the owners brought as the only piece of furniture from their original home to the new apartment. The result is a creative and inspiring environment that sensitively responds to the needs of everyday life while also offering a visually appealing and timeless solution.
