The renovation of the attic spaces of the apartment villa in Nusle was unusual in that it was not a design of apartments for a specific user and the realization of their specific ideas, but rather aimed to attract a wide clientele of future tenants with its new atmosphere.
Two approximately equally sized rental apartments were created on the floor plan of the uninhabited attic and the neighboring spacious apartment. The smaller apartment (A) is designed as a duplex with an inserted floor, which contains a study and a bedroom, while the larger apartment (B) occupies the majority of the lower floor.
We tried to open up and brighten the layout of the new spaces as much as possible so that they corresponded to contemporary ways of living. Glass partitions allow light to enter previously dark hallways, and a steel staircase suspended on rods continues into the attic with a glass floor, revealing the complexity of the apartment and illuminating both the living floor with the bedroom and the entrance space through skylights. The choice of materials used was also influenced by cost; we sought more economical solutions while trying to break away from standard materials and ideas. We painted the bathrooms with a bright water-resistant yellow color; in both apartments, it thus shines brightly through the frosted glass partitions. The dividing walls, new doors, and built-in furniture in the bathrooms and kitchens were made from concrete plywood. In contrast to the completely contemporary interior elements, we were happy to preserve and work with original materials. In some rooms, we only sanded the parquet floors and treated them with white-pigmented oil, just like certain parts of the wooden roof structure, while we cleaned the old terrazzo floor and connected it with stainless steel plates to other rooms.
A common small symbol of both new interiors is swarms of butterflies, which in the form of graphics fluttered across the clear glass of the floors and partitions and also forms a small pattern cut into the metal of the entrance gate.
