The exhibition, after more than fifty years, presents the work of the most significant artist of Baroque art in Bohemia – Petr Brandl (1668 Prague – 1735 Kutná Hora). It showcases his monumental altar paintings, which have been restored for the purpose of this exhibition, as well as his portraiture and thematically very interesting genre paintings. Viewers will also see Brandl's newly discovered works for the first time.
In the architectural design of the exhibition Petr Brandl: The Story of a Bohemian at the National Gallery in Prague, the emphasis is on uncovering the space of the Valdštejn Riding School and its visual connection with the Valdštejn Garden. In the hall, the paintings of Petr Brandl are arranged in a minimalist and free manner. The shape-rich Baroque paintings contrast with the light material and structural solution. The base is made of raw black steel and glass.
Chronological and thematic lines run conceptually from the entrance to the back balcony. Monumental altar paintings are placed in the center of the space. The dominant feature is the "Břevnov group," which can also be viewed from the back balcony at a distance. Other large altar paintings are freely arranged in the space according to the timeline. The highlight of the exhibition is the largest horizontal painting, The History of Joseph the Egyptian, which is placed under the back balcony.
A larger-sized painting, The Repentant Mary Magdalene, and altar paintings are placed on two vertical rectangular sections embedded into a stabilizing steel plate of circular shape. Horizontal steel profiles are anchored to the sections, and between them are MDF boards that form the backs of the altars. The remaining paintings are placed on large vertical glass panels that stand thanks to the steel constructions (bases), into which the glass is inserted. All texts related to the works and the author's life are placed under the paintings on horizontal steel structures.
In the architectural design, we were inspired by the exhibition principle used by Lina Bo Bardi at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo in Brazil in the 1960s.
