Holesovice loft

Renovation of an apartment in a building from the 1930’s

Holesovice loft
Architect: Geraldine Savary
Completion:2012

Organization of the space

This loft is designed to tend towards one single open-space, while providing privacy if wanted. The choice was made to create discrete glass partitions allowing the user to have direct and indirect views to the next rooms, thus offering various perspectives.
Materials and atmosphere
There is a subtle balance between the use of cold materials: steel, concrete and glass versus warm materials: wood and bricks.
  • In the living area, steel/glass vs. oak wooden doors/bricks,
  • In the kitchen, aluminum vs. wood,
  • In the bathroom, concrete/metal vs. wood.
Light
A highlight of this project was to enhance the flow of both natural and artificial light throughout the different spaces. During daytime, the translucent glass walls allow natural light to penetrate in the bathroom and bedroom areas. At night, wherever the light source is, the room turns into a glowing box illuminating the rest of the space.
Interior decoration
All the custom made furniture - bed side tables, living room and bedroom shelves - is adapted to the metal glass wall grid. Selected pieces of original vintage furniture are added to underline the urban loft era of the 80’s.
Comfort through functionality and space maximization
  • The main living area can be twofold. Either open or separated into two rooms by an unfolding door concealed in the central wall.
  • A retractable panel is designed under the kitchen counter to accommodate 6 people for diner.
  • Shelves and doors are recessed in the walls to maximize floor area.
  • An open Italian shower enhances user space and comfort.
  • On the opposite side of the brick wall, a mat white wall serves as a screen for an integrated ceiling projector and HD sound system.
