Council Remembrance Church

Konzilsgedächtniskirche Lainz-Speising

Council Remembrance Church
Architect: Josef Lackner
Coauthor: Sepp Müller
Address: Kardinal König Platz 1, Hietzing, Wien, Austria
Project:1966
Completion:1967-68

This church, built in the 1960s, is marked by the mood of change and breakup within the church.
New architectural concepts seemed to be possible through a new openness and democracy of the church as institution.
Josef Lackner developed an interior church space which is rich in contrasts. The church is based on a square plan with heavy external walls which contain a circulation in the first story. A circumferential celestory provides sufficient light for the interior and makes the roof to seem weightless. Later Additions and Changes were made by the architect Sepp Müller.
