The design of the new library in Olomouc transforms the former residential boiler house into an open cultural center with a community focus. The original building is a single-story structure with a relatively generous ceiling height. This fact, along with the decision to preserve the original load-bearing structure for economic reasons, led us to a solution that involves a simple addition running along the perimeter of the building, creating a gallery with an open space in the center of the layout. A glazed skylight is then designed on the existing load-bearing structure, supported by steel trusses into the original load-bearing system. By combining these elements, which are the backbone of the entire design, an airy, clear, and well-lit space will be created. Such a space we dare to call cultural.
The operation of the library is designed to be open and adaptable. It is not just a place to borrow books; the library shelves in the hall are movable, easily creating space for various events, such as lectures, workshops, or community gatherings of different groups of residents. An integral part of the interior is also a slide, which adds a playful element and opens the library more to young readers. Daylight plays an important role here as well. Thanks to the height of the original building, it penetrates deep into the interior and changes throughout the day. The light thus helps shape the character of the individual parts – the center is bright and lively, while the edges are calmer and suitable for reading and focusing. Differences between the individual zones arise naturally, without the need for significant separation of space.
In a broader context, the new library responds to the environment of the housing estate, where quality places for spending leisure time are often lacking. The transformation of the original technical building creates a new center that can revitalize the entire area. An important component is also the outdoor community garden, which directly connects to the library hall and becomes an integral part of the space.
The project was created based on the winning design in an open architectural competition announced by the city of Olomouc in 2020. The jury selected our design from 58 submissions, particularly appreciating the thoughtful spatial arrangement and fulfillment of operational requirements.
And the internal, almost self-evident solution of the organization offers a remarkable, even playful layout of the entire interior…The English translation is powered by AI tool. Switch to Czech to view the original text source.
