The house is located in a somewhat unplanned residential area on the outskirts of the town of Algarrobo in the Chilean region of Valparaíso. The main challenge for the architects was to create a distinct environment that would be visually isolated from its neighbors. The project is divided into two phases: a single-story main house (already completed) and a two-story guest house (currently planned). In the southern part of the plot, there is an outdoor pool and terraces. On the western side, there is a platform for watching the sunset. All outdoor spaces are connected by walkways and staircases.
The house rests on a square floor plan measuring 13 x 13 meters, which is divided into a grid of 1 x 1 meters based on a structural system of laminated wooden beams. This modular arrangement of prefabricated elements allows for spatial variety and easy construction. In the center of the layout is a large open atrium that connects the visual axes north-south and east-west, offering panoramic views of the landscape. The bedrooms and study are located at the corners, providing them with ample privacy.
The design aims to utilize orientation in all cardinal directions and not just the view of the sea. The layout allows for cross-ventilation and plenty of natural light. The prefabricated wooden structure reduced construction time, minimized errors, and shortened the impact on the environment. The exposed load-bearing structure and the texture of the material give the building a rational appearance that aligns with the surrounding nature.
