Staroměstká is a full-scale reconstruction of an apartment located in Prague’s historic center, addressing both structural and spatial aspects.
Original refurbished elements such as doors, frames, and windows, were complemented by contrasting furniture, incorporating restored pieces found in the apartment.
This spatial approach is an interplay between retained and historical with new interventions, completed by a curated ensemble of artworks.
The result is sometimes more daring, sometimes subtle, but always expressive, constantly tingling with playful tension.
When we visited the place for the first time, it was buried under layers of carpets, wallpapers, and dusty curtains. The layout took us through narrow corridors of built-up furniture—past a kitchen set from the early 1920s, characteristic 1970s-era furniture, all the way up to the Ikea series.
Reconstruction started with clearing out and stripping away the layers. And that was only the beginning of a complete renovation; digging, flipping and rummaging.
Our approach to the complex layout included the design of two independent units - a spacious apartment and a studio. The flooring was newly completed, including the installation of sub-base concrete, utility infrastructure, and wall plastering. The paneled doors, profiled frames, and casement window cladding were refurbished.
Several pieces of original furniture were restored and integrated into metal shelving units or combined with new furnishings.
Every room is anchored by a prominently placed object: blue kitchen island, orange-upholstered sofa oriented toward multiple sides of the living room, or stone-green double bed positioned in front of the bedroom window. While all the rooms are spacious and bright, most of them still retain their own intimate and quiet hideouts.
A separately designed studio consists of a compact unit; the kitchen counter seamlessly transitions into a staircase leading to the mezzanine sleeping area, with a bathroom tucked underneath. Though modest in footprint, the Raumplan structure brings spatial dynamics and everyday comfort.
