The Gustav Heinemann (Alsen) footbridge connects the park landscape of the Spree-bogen with the urban, southern square for pedestrians in front of the Lehrter train station. As a "place of transition" in the city it should be integrated into its surroundings in as restrained a man-ner as possible and refer to the places to which it leads. Both of the trusses and the plate "hung in between"-the actual walkway-are the bridge's three main elements. Its outer layer is formed by the two main steel trusses, which possess a clear geometrical and constructive system. They are lent a certain elegance through their slight camber and the use of narrow members. The inner layer of the bridge consists of the walkway with its oak plank floor and delicate steel railing. Both the lighting for the walkway and its underside, clad with oak planks, sit at the junction of the posts with the upper and lower chords of the main trusses. The supports for the bridge are simple wall slabs; on the south side supporting pillars are clad in masonry.
