Brno – A new parking lot with 76 spaces, accessible bathrooms, and a new tram stop is set to replace the current unpaved area that people use to park near the crematorium at the Central Cemetery in Brno. The funeral and cemetery services of the city of Brno are currently working on a study to determine how the site will look after renovations costing over 40 million crowns. This was announced to reporters today by Brno councilman and chairman of the company Michal Chládek.

The Brno city council approved the investment plan last year. Currently, there are 50 parking spaces by the crematorium, but they are often insufficient, prompting people to use the unpaved area behind the road, which does not have an adequate connection to the busy Jihlavská street.

"We are now preparing the tender documentation for the selection of the contractor for the study, which will serve as a basis for the planned development of the entire area. Following the completion of the study and the subsequent issuance of planning and building permits, construction is expected to begin next year," Chládek stated. The city must also settle the ownership of the land before starting work, part of which is owned by a private company. According to Chládek, the property department of the Brno magistrate is negotiating with the owner of this portion.

During construction, the Funeral and Cemetery Services plan to use environmentally friendly materials and also aim to work on rainwater retention. A new tram stop is also expected to be built near the parking lot in the future. The estimated costs at current prices are approximately 42 million crowns, but this may change before the actual construction begins, Chládek warned.
