Ostrava – The City of Ostrava is preparing the modernization of the underpass at the tram stop Důl Hlubina, which is the gateway to the Lower Vítkovice area. Especially during summer festivals, tens of thousands of people pass through the underpass daily. The costs of the reconstruction are estimated at around 100 million crowns excluding VAT. This was announced to journalists today by the spokesperson for the city council, Gabriela Pokorná. The project documentation is currently being prepared.

"The aim of this construction is to modernize the tram stops and the underpass itself under Místecká Street. The architects utilized the existing above-ground concrete monolith of the underpass and proposed a combination of concrete and steel with glazed elements complemented by a red brick cladding strip that corresponds with the nearby Hlubina structures. Immediately adjacent to the underpass towards Hrabůvka is a bus shelter in the same design, while on the opposite side towards the center of Ostrava, the shelter is already free-standing," said the Deputy Mayor for investments and transport, Břetislav Riger (Ostravak).

The project also includes the modernization of both tram platforms, where there will be a camera system and Wi-Fi connectivity. In addition to benches located in the shelters, seating will also be available on lowered walls along the platform. The plan also includes modifications and additions to the sidewalks around the platforms and repairs to Hlubinská Street, where two new parking spaces will be added, as well as adjustments to part of the access road from Železárenská Street.

The underpass will also feature a space for artists, who will be invited to propose various types of graffiti on designated areas. The proposal also includes the construction of illuminated advertising displays, where festival programs can be projected. There are also plans for facilities for cyclists who will be able to pass through the underpass as well.

"The stops will be equipped with public lighting. Drainage will be partially addressed by absorption into the nearby greenery. To improve accessibility for cleaning, the existing small building next to the former city police building will be repaired, where cleaning machines will be stored," Riger added.

This year, the project documentation will be submitted to the building authority and the city expects that a construction permit will also be issued. Next year, a contractor is to be selected, and the actual reconstruction is planned to take place.
