In Ústí nad Labem, the renovation of Mírová School has started, children will go to a replacement on September 14

Ústí nad Labem – The renovation of the outdoor part of the Mírová Elementary School in Ústí nad Labem began today with the handover of the project documentation to the construction company. The city will pay about 200 million crowns for the investment. First-graders will start attending a nearby temporary school on Stavbařů Street from September 1, while other children will begin two weeks later. The school's principal, Kamil Veigend, told reporters today that the secondary technical school, which previously used the building as a temporary space during the reconstruction of its own facility, still needs to move out.

The Mírová Elementary School building is 49 years old and has never undergone a significant renovation. The windows are also original. The principal stated that replacing them would help the cleaners, for whom washing the original windows was often dangerous. "A pane fell out here in June and got stuck in the grass," Veigend pointed to an empty opening covered only by a blind instead of a glass filling. "This is exactly where the children move around, so fortunately, by mere coincidence, nothing unfortunate happened," noted the principal. There are also issues with the peeling cladding of the building.

Now, the school staff are preparing for the move. They have stored some items in containers on the school premises. Veigend stated that the aim is to minimize the impact of the reconstruction on the students. First-graders will start on September 1 and will learn through after-school extracurricular activities. The official school year will begin on September 14 at the temporary school on Stavbařů Street. Students and staff will be served meals in the cafeteria in the original school building on Mírová Street. The section with the cafeteria and kitchen will be renovated last.

After repairs, which are expected to last 12 months, there will be new windows, cladding for the school, a new roof, lighting, recovery systems, and photovoltaics. "The project has a fundamental pillar, which is the reduction of the energy performance of the entire building," said Pavel Janoušek from the construction company OHLA ŽS. The school's interiors are also outdated, but their renovation is not yet planned. "The project does not focus much on the interiors and internal fittings and materials but mainly on the outer shell," Janoušek added.

The Mírová Elementary School is one of the largest in the city, with over 600 students attending. The city has been planning the renovation for several years. The long preparations were also due to changes in building regulations, which required the project to be redesigned, said Mayor Petr Nedvědický (ANO). In about two years, renovations are expected to begin on the elementary school in Všebořice, which is also in poor condition.
