Brno – The stream on the Svratka River near Bauerova Street in Brno's Pisárky district is set to be transformed. Brno is now seeking a contractor to build a system of fords, ponds, or resting places in the area, according to the procurement documentation. According to the spokesperson for the Brno City Hall, Filip Poňuchálek, the goal is to create a place for gathering and relaxation, he told ČTK.
After revitalization costing 13.5 million crowns excluding tax, meanders are set to be established along the 85-meter stretch of the stream, loosening the streambed. Forbs and ponds will also be added, and access will be improved with wooden stepped stairways. According to Poňuchálek, a sports facility will also be created, likely with amenities for volleyball and badminton.
The modifications also include the adjustment of the boiling area, i.e., the space below the weir. Workers will remove sediment from the bottom and reshape the banks with stones. Additionally, several dozen trees and greenery will be added in the vicinity. "If everything goes smoothly, work could begin in the summer. Completion could be expected in the first quarter of 2027," added Poňuchálek.
The project follows flood protection measures that Brno is gradually preparing on the Svitava and Svratka rivers to ensure protection against a hundred-year flood. The construction in the section from Riviera through Poříčí to the railway viaduct on Uhelná Street was completed last year and cost 1.5 billion crowns. This year, construction work is expected to begin on the Svratka from Uhelná to the railway bridge over the river and Dufkovo embankment, as well as on the Svitava from the bridge at Hladíkova Street to the railway bridge beyond Černovická Street downstream.
