The leading European architectural competition organized by Schindler was won by a duo from the German University of Applied Sciences in Koblenz. Participants were tasked with revitalizing derelict spaces in the Austrian capital Vienna, with special emphasis on improvements related to accessibility for the physically disabled. Nils Krieger and Thorsten Stelter received the first prize of 5,000 EUR for their project "Triangle," while the faculty in Koblenz secured the first prize of 25,000 EUR among schools.

During the festive announcement of the results of the Schindler Award 2008 at the Cultural and Congress Center (KKL) in Lucerne, Switzerland, additional awards were also given to students and schools.
The chairperson of the jury, Professor Françoise-Hélčne Jourda, stated that the excellent participation was evidence of “the growing interest in accessibility issues and universal design”. A total of 369 projects from 957 students across 17 European countries vied for the prestigious prize.

Winners
The second prize of 3,000 EUR goes to Jakub Krčmář and Martina Šotkovská from the Czech Faculty of Architecture CTU. The third prize (2,000 EUR) was awarded to Krisztián Csémy from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, Slovakia. The fourth and fifth prizes of 1,000 EUR each were received by teams from the French Ecole Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Bretagne and the Finnish Tampere University of Technology.
The Finnish university also placed second among schools and received 15,000 EUR, while Turkey's Middle East Technical University came in third (10,000 EUR). Schools were recognized for supporting the participation of their teams and for incorporating the theme of accessibility into their lectures. The funds awarded will go to the research departments of the faculty.
Five projects from France, Germany, Austria, and Turkey were nominated, while four others - from the UK, Belgium, Poland, and Austria - were specially mentioned.

Task
Participants were invited to rebuild the derelict spaces in the center of Vienna that were formerly home to the gasworks. They had to create a place accessible to all regardless of physical abilities, embodying the idea of “total urbanism.” Their projects had to adhere to the principles of sustainability as well as economic and environmental viability, providing a quality life for residents. The chairperson of the jury, Françoise-Hélčne Jourda, said the site was chosen “to force students to confront traditional urban problems: transportation, derelict areas, issues of public transport, and the question of incorporating the river”.

Competition
The Schindler Award 2008 is the third annual event since the competition was established in 2003 by the Schindler Group. It is evaluated by a panel of architects, urban designers, and specialists in disabilities, assessing how young architects respond to the challenge of designing cities and structures that are complex and accessible to all, including elderly and physically disabled citizens. The competition requires students to think beyond form, light, and materials, considering how their designs will affect the people who must live with them throughout their lives. The competition has been very successful and has raised awareness of accessibility issues among young architects and architectural institutions in Europe. It has also inspired architecture schools to incorporate the theme of accessibility into their curricula.
“It is very important to hold competitions that force young architects to think about the future of their practice, and to support them in caring for people - all people,” said the chairperson of the jury, Françoise-Hélčne Jourda.
