Brno – The winner of the urban planning competition for the transformation of Stará osada in Brno's Židenice is the atelier schwerpunkt. According to the jury, the proposal shows that from a heavily utilized transfer hub, a vibrant center of Židenice with a square, market, and park can emerge, the city council stated today in a press release. The competition was organized by the Office of the Architect of the City of Brno, and the city council discussed the results today.

Stará Osada is one of the important transport hubs in the city. "The vision of the winning team proposes to transform the transport-affected area into a square that seamlessly transitions into a market and park. The barrier of the busy streets Svatoplukova and Gajdošova could become a new urban boulevard. Brno can gain a vibrant yet safe space lined with tree rows and significant urban buildings,” said the city's mayor, Markéta Vaňková (ODS).

According to the mayor of the district, Petr Kunc (Hlas pro Židenice), a square that would connect the historic parts and the emerging neighborhood of Nová Zbrojovka is missing in Židenice. "The winning proposal excellently works with the existing building structure, allows for phasing in relation to private investments, provides the municipality with space to enhance civic amenities, such as a library, community hall, or public housing, and also addresses the development of greenery across the entire area," Kunc said.

In the coming months, people will be able to view the winning proposal and other proposals at an exhibition. The proposal will serve as the basis for a conceptual urban study of the area. "This proposal does not mean that construction will start tomorrow. It is a long-term process, but it is the first foundational stone towards making Stará osada and Gajdošova a valuable urban space, not just a transfer hub,” Kunc added on the platform X.
