A showcase of engineering artistry. This is how this year's Engineering Chamber Awards can be described. The results of its 20th edition were announced on Saturday, October 19, during the Assembly of Delegates of the Czech Chamber of Authorized Engineers and Technicians Active in Construction (ČKAIT), which organizes these traditional awards. In total, the work of project and implementation teams for 12 buildings completed in the critical years of 2021 to 2023 was awarded. Four projects received the main award, the Engineering Chamber Award 2023. One Special Award for affordable and sustainable housing was presented, which is intended to inspire state administration and local governments. Six buildings received Honorable Mentions from the jury.
The jury highlighted and awarded two reconstructions or renovations of historically significant buildings with the main prize. These were the Reconstruction of the Old Town Weir on the Vltava River in Prague and the Revitalization of the Imperial Baths in Karlovy Vary. The Reconstruction of the synagogue and rabbi's house No. 200 in Žatec received the Public Award and the Insurance Broker PM ČKAIT Award.
Among the awarded are two structurally interesting footbridges. The main award was won by the footbridge over the railway tracks at the station in Cheb. The footbridge and cycling connection between the Lower Area of Vítkovice and the center of Ostrava received an Honorable Mention from the jury.
The fourth main award goes to the entirely new Slovany tram depot in Plzeň with the largest green roof in the Czech Republic, which exemplifies a responsible approach to the realization of an essential industrial complex in the city center. The jury also awarded an Honorable Mention to two technically exceptionally challenging construction projects carried out abroad: the modernization of navigating chambers at the Gabčíkovo waterworks and a section of the Stockholm tunnel bypass.
Preparation of two of the 12 awarded buildings took significantly longer. Four years elapsed between the start of project documentation work and the issuance of building permits for the Masaryčka – revitalization of the brownfield of Masaryk Railway Station in the center of Prague, where negotiations with heritage preservation authorities were challenging, and for the Biocentrum Veklice, where the designer had to cope with a change in the river manager's requirements and where, by finding an optimal solution, saved the builder a quarter of the construction costs.
"This year's edition of the Engineering Chamber Award highlighted several trends. It is true that the better the project was prepared, the faster it was approved. Often regardless of its construction, structural, or technological complexity. If something prolongs building approvals, it is often additional requests, changes in assignments, or negotiations with authorities in sensitive areas. Positive findings also relate to implementation prices – our authorized persons know how to design and build functional, ingenious, and aesthetically convincing footbridges or crossings with very rational construction and operational costs. The same applies to low-energy housing," summarizes this year's results Ing. Robert Špalek, Chairman of ČKAIT. In the case of residential projects, these are the cooperative apartment buildings in Dobruška that showcase solutions to the issue of housing availability not only in smaller towns and municipalities.
A condition of the Engineering Chamber Award competition is that the applicant of the engineering design must be a regular member of ČKAIT and must significantly participate in the creation of the engineering design as a designer, site manager, or representative of the contractor or technical supervisor of the builder.
