Hello Wood is happy to announce Project Village as the theme of its 2015 workshop and symposium.
Hello Wood is an international program for art, architecture and design. Projects are mostly constructed from wood and and results of a unique interplay of art, innovation and social com- mitment. Hello Wood integrates various fields of art, design and science; creates community and encourages talent.
It brings together students and professionals from across borders and connects the public with the designer community.
In the past 10 years numerous art projects have focused on the topic of community
settlements. From the experimental settlement of AVL Ville built by Joep Van Lieshout, through Yael Bartana’s propagandistic art work Wall and Tower, to Thomas Hirshhorn’s Gramsci Monument, a temporary community centre built by the local community in the Bronx. These works all raise ques- tions on the role of community settlements, their reciprocal relation to their environment, urban, cultural, socio-political context.
In 2015, Project Village will join this debate. Continuing the tradition of Hello Wood, participants are invited to build a one–to-one model of their collective vision of a village. In this experiment, after designing the different parts, we will build a settlement in one week, and set it on its way to occupy various environments and to be occupied by different communities and multiple activi- ties.
What will the architectural manifestation be of our community force? Once constructed, how will Project Village live on? Will it become an infrastructure for future events?
This year we are challenging the autonomous projects to be part of a whole, to establish a relation to one another and to create a hamlet in Csórompuszta that lies on a small rise in the South West of the Hungarian countryside, where it will make its debut as an event space.
We are also planning to extend the life of the village by transporting it to different environments, and introducing it first to the temporary community of a festival, then to the urban public as it becomes part of the everyday life of the city. This way our village will become a travelling circus, showcasing events, holding discussions throughout the year related to the theme and nuanced by the context of the Sziget Festival and Budapest Design Week.
In 2015, once again, we have the opportunity to build 12 projects,
on our site in Csorompuszta, Hungary.
We are looking for architecture, designer, or art students persuing their graduate or undergraduate studies, who feel inspired by Project Village.
