Diagonal Mar Park

Parc de Diagonal Mar

Diagonal Mar Park
Address: Carrer Llull 362, Sant Martí, Barcelona, Spain
Investor:Diagonal Mar / HINES
Project:1997
Completion:2002
Site Area:143000 m2

The park is comparable in size to Barcelona’s proximity to the Avenida Diagonal and the Calle Taulat, and above all its direct connection to the beach make it seem much bigger. The project for the park favours its fusion with the urban weave by laying it out as a series of paths that branch off in different directions like the boughs of a tree. The main avenue links the Avenida Diagonal directly to the beach, the Coastal ring road being crossed via a pedestrian footbridge. The section of this avenue, like the other paths Crossing the park, is gradually modified to become a series of play areas, bike and skating lanes, or relaxation zones with benches and pergolas.
The park’s most characteristic feature is an enormous lake, a huge surface with various fountains, a cascade and vegetation on its banks, all of which turn it into a recreation area for small boats and pastimes involving water. The vegetation, inspired by areas of marshland, consists of grassy knolls combined with verdant tree cover, which increases in height and density as it nears the adjacent streets. Round metal tubular structures redefine the space throughout the park by creating an unusual interplay of light and shadow. In the outermost areas of the park there are a series of little squares in which big earthenware jars covered with ceramic trencadis intermingle with the existing vegetation.
