This Coastal Traffic Centre is located on the island of Kvitsøy. Rather than building next to the old building, the architects decided to build on top of it. Minimizing construction, but also strengthening the profile of the pilot station as a beacon for sailors. The existing structure forms the core of the new building, with the new construction built around it, its surface broken in places to expose the inner structure. Angled walls of the whole building are clad in a unifying coat, mirroring the pitched roofs of the surrounding village, and picks up the ever-changing conditions of light and moisture of the sea. The brief for the project set out the requirements for a new traffic control building adjacent to the existing pilot station. The architects departed from this and established a volume based on an extension. The solution was area effective and minimised the area of occupied site, whilst at the time allowing the architectural potential of contrasting old and new.
